Xerokampos is a small coastal settlement in the southeast of Crete, already recorded in the 1583 Venetian census. The little whitewashed chapel of Agios Nikolaos (photo above right) is the landmark of the archaeological site of Xerokampos: On Farmakofefalo, a low hillock right by the sea, an important town, mainly of the Hellenistic period (4th-1st century BC), has been excavated under the direction of N. Papadakis since 1984. Low walls are still standing, numerous sherds lying around. |
